Dissociative Identity Disorder is a disorder in Mental health.

It was formally known as Multiple Personality Disorder.

It is primarily characterised by some alteration in a person's identity, resulting in the person losing their sense of identity or assuming a new identity.

Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is not a term generally used now as it is misleading. Actual confirmed cases of MPD are extremely few and far between, there is even some doubt as to whether it exists as a condition, especially in relation to patients who are claimed to have many personalities from which they switch from one to the other.

However there are hundreds of thousands of people diagnosed with dissociative disorders. They exhibit a wide range of symptoms, many of which are the same as symptoms for other mental illnesses and personality disorders.

Hullucinations (visual, auditory and tactile), delusional thinking, memory loss, unusual behaviour, psychsomatic illnesses and paranoia are all symptoms of DID but are also symptoms often associated with schizoprenia.

Memory loss, confusion, disoriention are typical of dissociative amnesia.

Many personality disorders are characterised with dissociative behaviour.
' We define personality disorders as clusters of
behavioural traits that are excessive, maladaptive
life long and pervaisive'
- P.C. Kendall & C. Hammen
'Abnormal Psychology' 1995.

Hope that has helped, if you would like more inforamtion on symptoms and their classifications, try google-ing 'DSM-IV Classifications. The DSM-IV (four) is like the big book of symptoms of mental health problems.
