The classic example (for good to go to war) is probably WWII and how Chamberlain went so far to try to avoid it and how big a mistake that was. (Most historians agree that Hitler would have been quickly defeated if France & Britain had gone to war following the German reoccupation of the Rhineland) The American Civil War might be a fair example as well. The first Gulf War (1990) & the Falklands War (1980) are also worthy of consideration.
Sun Tzu is relatively quick to read, and you'd probably only need the first part, but he said it well 2500 years ago. "I know of no nation that has ever benefitted from a protracted war." (Quoting from memmory)
The short answer pro-war is sometimes bad things happen if you don't try to stop them.
The short answer to anti-war is war is very costly if it cannot be ended quickly.
Clauswitz is tough to read, but he's a good relatively modern source on the subject.
If you can maintain objectiveity this is a good topic for a paper. If you can't remain objective you will not be able to make convincing arguments.

I do not believe it is good to have to go to war because I believe that violence is the lowest form of communication between any persons, Yet somehow there is a need to do such a thing when you must match the actions of aggressed people, Defending ones self...Defending ones country....Defending ones beliefs....Sometimes aggression must be met with aggression only because .that is all that country or persons understand to alter behavior that could be dangerous to others or to ones self,
or to ones country, or ideas. To make a person or persons disengage from negative or dangerous activity. War is war ... it is ugly and destructful to many innocent persons. It is aimed strategically at forces whom are showing dangerous behavior towards others. Isreal went to war to show Hezbollah not to kidnap their soldiers, and to stop threatening their country, though their reasons may have been understandable, the damage that was done to that country is irreversible. Persons in power need to be more responsible in their attitudes when it comes to destruction. Not just Isreal, all over the world. Lebanon had no right to provoke Isreal either. Persons need to understand that progress and growth stems only from unity and assisting one another to gain momentum in this world. Anger and fear have never resulted in positive behavior in the world. People need to find ways to overcome their differences in productive manners.
It is very unfortunate that the world is so chaotic at this time in your life. I can only hope that your paper can help change someones mind about going to war. Words solve problems not guns......

ok good wars is like world war 2 if that war was lost many more would of lost there lifes, due to the death camps so everyones freedom was protected.
and its horrible to go to war as many people lose there lives and they have done nothing wrong.
if people think its good as they deserve it then think on this, what if that one child yes that one child that was killed was our savior, the only one person that comes up with a cure against aids or cancer things would be different then wouldnt it.

never good to go to war, but when it is the lesser of the evils, defending ourselves and our freedoms, many have given their lives so we could live as we do. Are threats worth defending ourselves for, or did we do the right thing in Afghanistan and Iraq, I believe the US was attacked on 9/11/01, any threats had to be taken seriously. keeping people free to live with the rights to pursue a better life is just. to fight for possession and control is going to provoke opposition. good luck with your paper. I hope this inspired some thought for you.

Well if there is a just cause to go to war then that in itself is a good thing
Also wars help us advance technologically faster.....without wars our government wouldnt have to spend as much money on R&D to give us an "edge" over the enemy

It is good to go to war because you can be proud of what you like.
And it is not good to go to war because it is very dangerous and you can die by having war.

Let's see, on one hand, war kills people. On the other hand, war kills people. The only ones making money are the ones selling bullets. And they don't get killed.

Unnecessary wars are not good and stupid, but any other kind (like civil wars) is good for me.
