cheapest way to travel is to buy a car or go by coach - despite the long distances the coaches are not that bad. Most backpackers go up or down the coast from town to town, stopping to pick fruit or whatever for supplimentary income.
I wouldn't recommend hitch-hiking (even though Ivan's in jail he had lots of weird brothers) and make sure you get a work visa - being deported for working illegally happens to too many travellers.
As for the horror stories concerning deadly animals, yes there are many but 20 million of us seem to cope with them OK. If you don't do stupid things like swim in crocodile-infested billabongs or stick your hands into spider holes or try to befriend the snakes you should cope too.

You can backpack your way around Australia. As for the other guy that said Skippy is a wallaby he was wrong Skippy was in fact a western grey Kangaroo and Skippy was a female. As for kangaroos jumping down our streets I don't know where he gets his information from but they are more in the rural parts of Australia, I haven't seen a Kangaroo jumping downa road since I went Bush. As for snakes that is only in the summer and nine out of ten times it is only a king brown not a red belly and for the spiders well if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone. Blue tongue lizards only try to scare you with their agression and like before if you leave them alone they will leave you alone.
By all means come to Australia, you will need to get a visa but it shouldn't be that hard from your country and back pack around our beautiful country. You will find that we are friendly bunch of people and usually will point you in the right direction.

beware funnel web spiders, red belly black snakes, killer kangaroos that roam the streets
[remember "skippy " was a wallaby not a kangaroo ] sharks in the surf , mosquitoes that can suck your blood dry and leave you in desperate need of a blood transfusion, fleas as big as baseballs that can leap over 20 ft walls and crash through tent walls, blue tongue lizards the bite of which never heals and recurrs every 12 months as a festering puss oozing ulcer requring hospitalisation for days and days. other than that it's a good place to visit .pick up a visa that allows you to work part time . without that you will be transported to an island detention centre for months before you are sent back home with a bill to pay for your accommadation and air fare. note: no money ,no leave and you just keep racking up the bill.

I'm an Aussie as well, don't worry about those other blokes, they're just jealous. If you want to work here's just a few jobs available http://www.seek.com.au/index.ascx?ovmkt=3O2SGKMQMTHV6OQ6JBU7FMH3SS&OVRAW=seek%20jobs&OVKEY=job%20seek&OVMTC=standard
Our unemployment numbers are down to less than 4% and we are recruiting overseas all the time so there's heaps of jobs going. You can backpack around if you want.
