It depends - is it a domestic cat? Is it a Maine Coon? (Maine Coons tend to run heavier than most cats -- due to their sheer size of being bigger, longer, etc.)

Does the cat look "heavy" for it's size? Can you feel the ribs? If it looks heavy & you can't feel the ribs easily -- then, yes, 22 lbs is too heavy.

** DO NOT PUT CAT ON STARVATION DIET ** Not that you asked about this -- but many times heavy cats are placed on strict diets which make them lose weight too rapidly & they come down with Hepatic Lipidosis or Fatty Liver Disease as the fat breaks down in the blood stream & they get sick. Talk w/ your vet -- some vets recommend a high fiber diet (canned is better than dry for losing weight) or a high protein diet (canned, again, is better than dry for losing weight). But before cat goes on diet - best to get him/her checked out by vet & then weekly weigh-ins @ vet's.

For most breeds 22 pounds is overweight and will shorten the life of the cat by a long time. Maine Coon Cats can weigh a lot more than this and be healthy.

Please, give your cat a longer life .... they make food just for this that it will love.

Probably. When mine hit 15 pounds my vet put mine on a reduced diet. He is now down to 13. Not a bad start. I now only feed him twice a day but I keep a lot of fresh cool water out for him.

Sounds a little heavy
It depends on the cat. My kitty is very muscluar and I think he's about 19 pounds, but he was in no way fat. So it depends on your kittys health and body type.

Hi, 22lb.is to heavy for your cat.Besides that it unhealthy for a cat to be over weight. It can cause the pet to have heart problems, back problems and to much weight on their legs isn't good. You need to cut down on her food and play with her,so she can melt some of her fat off of her. Good Luck.

The appropriate weight depends on the breed of cat; some large-breed cats would be healthy at that weight; other breeds would be severely obese. You can do an asessment of your cat's state by looking at it from the top and seeing its silhouette. The comparison drawings here will give you an idea of where you cat is relative to ideal weight: http://www.iams.com/en_AU/jhtmls/nutrition/sw_NutritionQuestions_qanswer.jhtml?li=en_AU&sc=C&bc=I&pti=PN&qi=3000156

Depends on the cat. My sister has two cats both heavier than your cat and neither of them are fat AT ALL. They're just REALLY big. When they stretch up, they can reach her waist.

yes, that is quite heavy. there are the obvious health risks that others pointed out and you want to make sure your kitty is not too fat to clean him/herself in the private areas. this can lead to urine infections which if not treated in time will be leathal.
