Many moons ago when I went to boot camp, I just liked hearing from my friends. I didn't care what they yacked about (I'm female) and most of my friends talked about guys they were dating, etc. My guy friends would write that they thought it was so cool that I was actually going into the Natl. Guard & going through boot at 17. I didn't want to hear though from people who thought I was making a mistake. My husband is active duty and currently deployed. I can tell you what he doesn't like to hear from people who write: they hate the war, they think the military sucks, they think he has wasted his life & the best from his half-sister-he's a killer. If you stay away from comments like that, you should be fine. Just write a general letter about what you're doing, ask what the person is experiencing, what kind of people they've met, and when you hear back from him/her take their lead on what they wrote about. Although I will say this, I would write about how much I missed my bed, sleeping in, and a good home cooked meal.

I didn't know my husband when he was in boot camp. (a long story) I do know that little things help any recruit. The happier the better. If something MAJOR is happening, good or bad, you should tell them that too. If you to are more than friends, send gushy love notes. And since they don't get out much sexy letters & stuff might help the time go by faster. and PROMISE to cook for your friend, weither you're just friends or more. your friend WILL BE HUNGRY!! home cooked is way better than store bought in this case! wish your friend good luck & best wishes for me.

Tell him about your comfy bed that you spend hours in. The new girl you met the other night while out having a beer and how fine she was. Tell him about the sweat you broke into when you had to carry a weight for six or seven feet. The steak with all the trimmings your new girl friend served you last night. You know, things from home that will lift his spirits.

Do not tell him about the good life outside the camp.
Encourage him to survive the boot camp, and
Relay affectionate and inspiring messages.

Tell him about what is going on with you and his other friends. Ask about his experiences, and if there is anything he needs (cookies are always nice). Really any kind of mail is a morale booster. Finally tell him how proud you are of him for serving our country.

If something funny has happened to you or a friend, let him know. He'll be needing a good laugh or two.
