"Hero" is a term used far too lightly nowadays.

The GOP wants us to believe every cop, every fireman and every person serving in the military is, simply by being so employed, a hero. That is not an acceptable definition.

Traditionally, heroism has involved the conspicuous display of courage against a known formidable threat: a person having died accidentally cannot be a hero.

Likewise, persons unwittingly killed by IEDs, suicide bombers and/or snipers *ordinarily* can't be heroes:

the hero has to have reasonably specific advance knowledge of the identity and location of the enemy and the nature of the threat, and

the hero has to proceed unselfishly against that threat in order to achieve some tactical or strategic purpose.

Salman Rushdie has claimed that he was surprised for the jihad declared against him on account of his writings;

if this is the truth, he cannot be considered a hero for having written the material that prompted Islamic fundamentalists to issue a fatwa targeting him for assassination.

However, after he became aware of the threat and the reason therefor, his refusal to retract and denounce his earlier writings is definitively heroic!

Therefore, Salman Rushdie is a hero.
