So I took my asvad yesterday, and I'm sure I want to go active duty, but I don't have a clue about any of the Jobs I can take.
I know my recruiter and I could talk about it later this week, but I would like something to think on unitl then.
I know I'll be deployed to iraq so I"m not asking what job would keep me from being deployed and besides I want to fight for the country and people I so dearly love.
I was just wondering what are some good jobs.

Don't sign up for infantry or to drive tanks... my son likes being a helo mech (that will keep you more in the back lines). He is currently attached to a flight company in Korea where he is a crew chief. Today he was busy crewing 5 generals around. and Monday he will have 7 generals to cater to. Then there is avionics, also helo... both of the jobs I mentioned can be transferred to civilian life with good pay. If you are interested in medicine, there is corpsman, x-ray... the main thing remember that the recruiter is there to sign you up... don't let him talk you into a job you REALLY don't want. Just think about what you like to do. They need you! And don't figure that you will automatically be deployed to Iraq first thing.

Good luck and God Bless.

First off don't listen to the naysayers. Most of them have personal issues with the military or the current administration and shouldn't be posting there political thrash or non helpful comments to a good question.

Priority one, what did you score on the ASVAB? If you didn't score high some of the more technical jobs won't be avalible. Assuming that you scored high enough to get what you want the question is what do you want to get out of your time in the military? I will assume that you want a job with good transferable skills to the civilian world. Look toward the Mechanics either wheeled or aviation or construction engineers. Both of those give solid skills. If your good with languages go towards the Linquist side of the house. I've been told that translators get paid really well on the outside world. Problem with that is there not wanting translators for countries we do buisness with, they want translators for countries we might invade or get attacked so forget the Spanish that you learned in high school. I hesitate to recomend the signal side of the house because I've heard mixed things about como. There are some high skilled jobs and then there are some not so high skilled jobs. Best bet if you're looking into a signal job is to completely check out the job before signing anything. Of course you got special forces but I would recomend that you join the military first.

None of these jobs will get you out of a rotation to Iraq with the exception of maybe a job as a chinese translator.

I think you will find it will be an interesting experience. Before you sign on the dotted line pick a specific MOS that you have an aptitude for or something you want to learn. The military will send you to school. If you do not have a definite choice you may just be assigned to infantry unless that is what you want.

Many of the jobs in the military are not what you would call sexy like being a cook or a supply clerk but those jobs need to be filled as well.
I was in supply and made SSG/E-6 in five years. Other MOSs make take a bit longer to make rank in.
If you can while your are in the military take college courses.

Good luck with your career and thank you for serving our country.

ASVAB*

I would go for an Armored Position. I'm not sure what the MOS Code is for it, but I have never met ANYONE in Armored who doesn't love their job. How can you not love being in a machine that can take out an entire city by itself, run at 70mph, weighs more than a house, and cannot be destroyed by ANY handheld weapon known to man? I am Army National Guard (just like the reserves) and I'm currently in ROTC. When I commission, I will definitally be going Armored in the Reserves (NG doesn't have Armored).

Infantry is a good one. Probably get a nice bonus for it too.

Cav Scout I heard was fun. That's basically just a 1 HMMWV team that goes out and scouts.

Artillery is a good combat MOS. But, you'll probably never see combat just shoot at it from 20miles away. ;)

If you're good at PT (physical training) and can do about 70+ pushups in 2min, 80+ Situps in 2min, and run a 2mile under 13:00min and you have a good head on your shoulders... I would try out for Special Forces or Ranger. SF definitally better than Ranger. Not only that, but you go SF will be trained in a job that will be highly looked for in the Civ. world. Expecially if you do something such as 18E - SF Communications, SF Engineer, or Linguist.

Then there is always 91W - Combat Medic. You will have the best time in your life down in Ft. Sam Houston, but the only real down side is that you will never get to shoot the big guns... like the 50cal or MK-19 (40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher... it makes me hard lol).

MOS's I DON'T SUGGEST:
25 Series - Communications
92 Series - Supply

The site below will help you out alot.

If you have any questions, feel free to IM me @ mop_level_6

---Reply to other posts: NO MATTER WHAT BRANCH OF THE ARMY YOU GO INTO. YOU !!~WILL~!! BE IN THE SANDBOX! Reserves, National Guard, or Active. ALL GO TO THE SANDBOX! My National Guard unit is getting deployed for the SECOND time next year.

I know quite a few people who have been and are involved in various divisions of the military. Quite a few of them have trained to be engineers or mechanics. These are both very stable jobs, and you would always have a job once you are Stateside again. I also know several pilots who trained in the military, and now fly commercial and/or private. This is another excellent job, and if you enjoy travel, it would be wonderful. You can also be trained as a medic, if you are interested in being a paramedic, nurse or doctor. God bless you for being willing to go into the service and fight for our country and our values. My Dad fought in WWII and saw many things overseas when he was involved with liberating those horrible concentration camps that he was never able to talk to me about. War is a horrible, but sometimes necessary thing. You shall be truly blessed and I will pray for you every day. Have a good night and best of luck to you, your family must be very proud.

Your best bet would be to go to the website. www.goarmy.com there are detailed descriptions about almost every job in the Army. There is even a chat line where you can talk to other recruiters and people in the Army about there jobs. Good luck. I've been Army medical for a while now and love my job. Even here in Afghanistan I feel everyday like I'm doing something very important.

First of all, your an idiot. This "country" does not need you to fight in Iraq. It's a made up war and you be putting your life on the line for a bunch of politicians. You can't really be that stupid can you?
Secondly, to answer your question about military jobs, the job that you chose needs to have a civilian application. Artillery gunning may be cool but not many jobs at home need those skills. Now stick with me here. This leaves jobs like engineering, electronics, aviation, mechanics, and the like. AND YOU CAN GET ALL OF THESE JOBS BY ATTENDING COLLAGE AT HOME.
The best part is you don't have to die (or worse- get wounded) because someone got there intel. wrong.

when you sign up, once you start basic, you will be tested on alot of things. aptitude tests and such. it will give you the area they think is best suited in what fields. you pick a field you want and they send you off to train for it. from there they send you to your assignments. the recruiters are all full of it. don't believe anything they tell you. back when i was in, i was told all my college would be paid for and i go have choices of locations around the world. went to college and they paid a mere 445.00 a month with tuition at 20,000 a semester. i never got my locations. i later sued for fraud and breach of contract and won forcing the military to pay what it said it would.
