I know--it's even popular with people who don't believe in God or religion or spirituality. Go figure.
But seriously, I think it's because the really important questions in life are asked here: what is life all about? where did we come from? where are we going? is there any meaning to it all?
These types of questions are more important than how to get rid of pimples, or how to fix your computer.

I play around here because I study religion. It frightens me though about how ignorant and militant some people are.

I think this place may be popular, especially for non-Christians, because this is a relatively safe place to discuss religion. No one is going to be harmed physically, and no one has to worry about subsequent acts of violence. Most people don't feel comfortable discussing religion face-to-face in society, and this is an alternative that works for many.

Because every human has a profound need and desire to know why they exist. They desire to know the meaning of life and the source of hope. And whether by accident or by intent, these inner needs and desires point people to God. Unfortunately man wants to be ingenious in his search of God, when God has clearly stated how to find Him. So there's always tons of discussion to accompany the profound need to find meaning. Hence this popular section.
