While I was walking back from a store to my home at midnight (the store is located close to the home), police stopped and asked me whether I was going to burglarize a house close to the stopped location or not. I explained them I was just going back to the home, and they asked me an address of the home, then I was freed. But afterwards, the police was waiting me at my home, and they left when I arrived the home.

I would deeply appreciate if you would tell me anything I could do against the incident; because I do not want police to have any bad record/reputation on me.

Thank you for your help!

you could file a profiling complaint with internal affairs. your area may have been burglarized just recent and they are checking everyone. checking them is one thing, but folling you is profiling. in our area, the cops have nothing better to do than stop everyone riding a bike after dark without a front headlight and rear tail light get a 56 dollar ticket. its gotten out of hand with police in this country. in law school we were told they hide behind a badge as they can't get real jobs. they act cocky and think they are gods as they have a badge on. of the 1500 we have on our force, only about 23 of them i know are pretty cool. the rest are jackasses. the power goes to their heads.

They were just doing their job thoroughly. You did the correct thing by telling them the truth. They just checked out your story to make sure that you were telling them the truth. The other cops here can back me up on this, you would be amazed at the level of activity a neighborhood can generate in the dead of night. People on foot at that time of night are immediately suspect, not of a specific crime usually, but of the potential for what you might / might not do, depending on the area. Be grateful, they were just making sure you are safe to leave your home and walk to the store at night, and not get mugged, or have your home burglarized while you are gone.

General the thing you dont know is what was going on in the neighborhood at the time you were walking back from the store... I'm willing to bet you were the only person on foot around at that time, so all they were really doing was giving you the once over... then waiting for you at your house was to verify your story ( trust me they get lied to ALL the time ) Don't worry about your reputation.. they let you go and that's good enough. You also might want to do your shopping in the afternoon.

My guess would be that they had a report of someone trying to burglarize the house, and you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The police had the right to stop you and ask you, so I'm afraid there's nothing you can do, and It wont give you a bad rep.

As rumplestilts said, thank the police for looking out for your neighborhood. You may have matched the description of the suspect or your vehicle may have. As far as them being at your house when you got home, they are simply checking to make sure your story matches. Police don't get out with you and then say to hell with it afterwards. There is follow up work done. As far as them having a bad image of you, just stay out of trouble. Keep your nose clean and they will not have a bad image of you. Police don't get a bad image of people just because they get out with them while looking into other things. If you have done nothing wrong, they will leave you alone.

what if it had been your house and a suspious person was out late at night. would you worry??? I think most people have a bad opionion about law enforcement officers. but you wont find many other people who would put their lives on the line for a crapy pay check. its funny my dad has been a cop for 25 years and i hear stories like this one all the time. they now know who you are. and you shouldn't have anymore problems they are just doing their jobs they dont mean any harm.

The police are just checking what you said. Maybe there was an incident of burglary in your vicinity prompting them to catch the culprit. Anyway, if there is abuse in authority, you can report the policemen to their chief.

Nope, nothing you can do. You told the cops the truth and that's the best answer. If they don't believe you, it's because cops don't believe anybody. They get lied to every day, therefore they assume that everyone is lying.

Looks like they were fishing in the dark...apprehending anyone walking outside after midnight. In the future, ask if you're under arrest and what charges the next time they want to detain you. Then get their badge numbers, take them to the next city council meeting and demand to know why they're hassling honest citizens....
