I can't receive updates and its running real slow. I bought comp in good faith.

Check with some organisations that can help you. There's no such thing as a truly free copy unless it's illegal. However, I'm sure there are some good societies out there that would help you to get the software you need to use your computer legally.

you can use the Windows Xp either it can be pirated or genuine. you can also start using updates. But don't open Microsoft web site.
