Try to stay in well lit areas, walk confidently and quickly but don't act frightened. There are security cameras at all the Metro stations I've been to. I've done this, but try to travel before it gets dark if you are alone.

you should be fine there, just use common sense at night.
stay in well lit areas and be aware of who is around you.
having no idea of how far you are from the station, I might still recommend taking a bus from the station to home. there are several bus routes that serve the College Park station, and if you buy a pass it'll cover the bus as well. usually the trains and buses run on a coordinated schedule so you won't have to wait a long time for the bus once you're train gets in. also remaining in the populated well lit station for your bus will be reassuring. even if it turns out to be a safe walk, you'll probably want the bus option if it's raining or during the winter.

It is "relatively" safe to travel in that area. Just use your common sense. Don't travel when it is too late. Try to travel when there are alot of folks around, if you are concerned about safety. A backpack is ok, since you will look more like a student. If you can, have your boyfriend come up to where you are until you are comfortable with the public transport. Your family should understand this, if they are in the area as well. Maybe you can travel with friends during daytime at first, just to get the hang of the commute. You will look like an easy target if you are travelling on your own late at night and trying to figure out where you are going.
Be safe.

There is always a shuttle bus to take you to the Metro Station without the need to walk - either the Unviersity's shuttle bus or regular Metrobus. Both buses pretty much operate during Metro's hours - but the University shuttle may not operate after Metro closes.

Yes it will be ok if you use common sense like the others said. Once you are in the metro station and on the train especially, it is ok but again use common sense. Also probably a good idea not to drive in DC, haha it's terrible!

During the day the station is OK
Do not take the Metro alone at night, or have your boyfriend walk you there.

I know the area. You are safe. Just be alert - like anywhere else. Metro is a nice, safe system.
