When you see his paws move, you will see his eyelids are also moving. It means he has entered the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep.During this time he dreams he is running and doing things. Dogs have similar sleep patterns to those of humans in that they dream and have stages of sleep.

Try this: when he is moving, very softly make a "meow" sound one time and watch him jerk. He is now dreaming of a cat! You can change his dreams just as your dreams can be changed by a tv program when you are asleep.

I call the strange barking dogs do in their sleep "cave barking" as it sounds like they are in a cave.

Dreaming

Your dog is having a mental disorder. Like sleepwalkers. I don't mean the conscious disorder, I mean the sub-conscious. If you let your dog go on like this, he'll be a sleepwalker. In other words, take him to the vet.

All animals dream, dreaming is the body's way of relaxing, resting the mind, (and that includes nightmares). Try not to worry, this is perfectly normal. Good luck and bless you both.

Same reasons that you do. Sleeping in one position for too long strains things, and one moves (without waking up) to relieve the stress.

They have RIM cycles just like we do when we dream. Eyes twitch, muscles contract, many seem to be running. (makes you wonder what they are running from huh?) I just love watching a newborn puppy who has never seen anything; moving his legs like he is running. What in the world is he running from????

Like everyone and their mother has said, he's just having dreams. Probably about chasing cats!

He is having puppy dreams, probably chasing a rabbit or something.

The same reason you do, in reaction to dreams, most likely.
