If you attempt to be spiritual without believing in God, then you end up being with new age or spiritualist groups.

Being religious implies mere belief. Which is good! Its kinda hard to follow God if you dont believe in him. But spirituality for the Christian implies a much deeper aspect than belief and has nothing to do with evil or free spirits. Observe....

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. -Galatians 5:16

I would define being spiritual as being focused on the fruits and teachings of the Holy Spirit which we are granted when we become Christians.

They don't go hand in hand. You can be religious and go to church every week and do all the right things - but it won't make you spiritual. On the other hand, many people are spiritual and worship in their own ways, but never step into a church. Usually when you hear the word "religious" it is dealing with someone who goes to church all the time, does all the "right" things, etc...but they could be spiritually dead inside! So - hope I wasn't more confusing!

Spiritual is being in touch with your being and the world around you in a sense that most can't fell (Search the allegory of the cave for this understanding) Religion is simply a cook book for spirituality, but most (I do mean 89 percent) don't use it correctly and kill eachother, or tell eachother they are going to hell, or kill eachother because the other is going to hell anyways. Religion should be taken as a way to get to peace, not something to "do". Anyways we are off subject (need to move my soapbox) You can be spiritual and not have religion, If you are a caring person with a good heart, you are spiritual, you can see this through your actions to test it out...

being spiritual is living first on insight and intuition then emotion and physical senses. Answers must be sought after from within the area you are looking, never are they in plain view. you can't just go asking questions and putting together answers based on physical observation. Any truth that cannot be seen is always veiled by a lie. you know a lie by its out going, out spoken, fortified nature, if you are wise enough to see past it, truth cannot hide from you. In this world lies surround us, the more spiritual you become, the more your eyes will begin to feel like x-rays. every individual is capable, and it hasn't a thing to do with religion.

No, religion is man made, Spiritual is God made. But then, religion is believing in something, and being spiritual comes by belief. So they kinda hold hands, but they don't always go hand in hand. Example: How many religions are there in the world?? Just make sure that its God made, and not man made. And if its God made, then they hold hands nicely.

No, because you can find God in a lot of different places, and through a lot of different experiences. I also think that you can be religious and spiritual, but you do not have to be religious to be spiritual.

No way! Religious people crucified Christ! Religion is an establishment controlled by man and is therefore corruptible. As for me, as a Christian, my spirituality is in my heart. I am totally accountable and I answer only to my Lord. There is no middle man needed.

I agree with davlynark. Religion often kills out spirituality. Religion is good for building a firm foundation, but if you don't move up from the foundation, you will be stuck in it when it dries and cracks (see what happens to the churches in Revelations). If you don't build your spiritual house, what will you have to protect you from the impending storms?

To really answer this question properly, one would have to have an understanding of what is meant by "spiritual". Several responders think they have an idea, but personally I am not at all clear on it. So I happily ignore the whole thing.

I agree with everyone on this.

Religion and Spirituality do NOT go hand in hand.

You can have both, and you can have one without the other.
