Other than finding that person, I would say very few benefits. Though that person may give you all the right answers on the net, you have no idea if they are really that way or how many times they have hit the backspace button or the delete button until they got it right, or at least to sound right. You can't truly judge their personality, who they are and what they are all about over the net.
In other words, I can tell you that I am slightly overweight although dieting, my hobbies are skiing, and rollerblades, and I would love to cook a beautiful meal for you. However, none of this is true. I'm thin, hate the cold, the only wheels are on my car, and I hate to cook. Is that any help?

If the person is honest, you get to know him well... Talk about easy, small things and know each other on a level one basis. On the other hand, if the other end is like dishonest and love to play with people online, bad... You could end up meeting the greatest fake ever and you just wasted time on talking to someone who didn't even exist... That's why I always say internet is the most unreliable thing when meeting people...

Everyone seems to show the other person their good side in the beginning of a relationship. Im reading lots of problems with couples who dont seem to be committed or know each other by other means of meeting. No difference except you can make conversation with differenet people from far away. Ya still have to get to know someone by learning to trust them...and that takes time.

Well I guess if they are honest you will get to know all about their background. What they do, what they like.
But...
I've been in a long distance relationship for 2 years, he finally came to visit me (he's staying with me right now) and I was Very disappointed. On the phone the childish things he did were cute but now in person.... I can see he's actually a mama's boy and extremely immature. He never lied to me or was dishonest but my perception of him was different from reality. I was mad at first but in the end I was mad that the relationship would not work out. I can't blame him for being who he is.
I still like him but every moment i'm with him I begin to think of him as my little brother (although he's older than me).

Well.......
you get to deceive yourself and fall for all their lies about what they look like and what they do for a living and live a nice fantasy before you meet them in person and come crashing back to reality; possibly as you run screaming from where you met them while trying to dial 911 on your cell at the same time.

Internet is the fast way to make friends. Some tells you the truth. Some says nicely to please you or secure a date. Some tells white lies, etc.
When you meet them, you think you know them very well because you guys talks on the internet already.
