Ummm....
a common gloss is that the "sin" was homosexuality
added by medieval clergy whose high death rate wanted as many people reproducing as possible in the wake of the Black Death and thus condemned homosexuality as a dead weight on society....
but the real "sin of Sodom" is Inhospitality to a Guest!!!
Look here:

Lot says:

Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, **for they have come under the protection of my roof*** (asterisk, my addition).

9 Get out of our way, they replied. And they said, This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them. They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

Gen 19: 20 "Then the LORD said, The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous

21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me."

in a later chapter they demand that Lot send 2 visiting angels out so they could have their way with them(the angels came in the form of men to lots house-Lot recognized something about them that he knew that they were angels). Lot was so appalled by this thought that he offered his virgin daughters to them but the Sodomites were so sicko that they didn't want to rape the daughters they wanted to gang rape the visiting men(angels).
see below for the actual account.

The only record of their destruction is in the Bible. Here it is. The reason is rather clear... Genesis Chapter 18...

22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. 23 Then Abraham drew near and said, "Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" 26 And the LORD said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

27 Abraham answered and said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." 29 Again he spoke to him and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." 30 Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." 31 He said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." 32 Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it." 33 And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of violence and immorality. Lot and his family were the only ones who survived because they were the only ones blameless in this respect. Then, sadly, Lot's wife looked back, presumably longing for the things she had left behind and she was turned into a pillar of salt. All of this is a good lesson for us. We can be survivors if we maintain our integrity, remain peaceful, trust God and don't look back.

The name Sodom is where we get the term Sodomy from. That might be a good place to start.
