The only reason I can think of is that people are used to it.
Even though the meaning of red light is entirely different. It means an area where prostitutes operate.

So the correct is traffic signal and not red light.

It's a generic slang term. It goes back to the days before traffic signals changed from red to green, with amber between. At that time, the lights were just red and flashed to indicate a stop.

Because we almost spend our time in red light and doesn't mind the amber or the green light. It is the red light that burns our blood and makes our time seems to stop.

I have noticed that some of the locals in Wisconsin refer to them as "stop and go" lights. Its more accurate than simply "stoplight" but seems like the long way to describe these things

we get conditioned to red light as a singnal to stop where we are.traffic singal is of three colours red(stop),yellow(wait),green(proceed).if we just say traffic singnal its confusing that is why automatically we called traffic singnal as red light.
