Buy her a cute but personalized birthday card and then purchase a gift card and put it into the envelope. This way you let her know that you love her and she can also go out and get something she likes. Another idea is to get her a membership in a massage parlor or suntanning.

Depending on how old you are, I'd take her out to a nice lunch/dinner and just reminisce about things. This may have her feel enlightened! If you have a camera, take some pictures and print them out for her. Moms love memories!
Then give her something to go with this. I'm not quite sure... I'm sure someone will provide that idea for you. Pj's, Book, really nice candle set, painting, flowers, bath accessories... whatever! Just have fun with it. When you find it, you'll know.

I make gift baskets for my family and friends. Examples: One of my friends loved to cook, so I bought jams, scone mix, honey, etc. other breakfast items, and he loved it. For my sister, I filled the basket with different chocolates and bought a chocolate champagne bottle. I go to the store "Cost Plus, World Market." It's a great store with items from all over the world, similar to a "Pier One" but in my opinion better and somewhat cheaper. Each gift basket I have made cost me under $100. I even go there for Easter to make my daughter and niece baskets every year.

You don't have to know exactly what she would like. Even if you know where she goes to shop or where she goes to hang out with her friends. You can just get a gift certificate for one of these places. Even a gift Visa card with a nice note attached to it with something personal writen on it from you.

I would make something for her. That would be special and sentimental. Make a card and if you are good at writing then write her a poem and tell her how special she is to you. If you don't like that then go with an outfit or give her a gift card so she can decide.

How about doing something for her instead of buying her something? For instance cooking her a nice dinner and making her a birthday cake or doing chores around the house. Or just spending time with her, that is always something nice for a mom to do for her birthday.

how about something from bath and body ? or victoria's secret, like lotion or shower gel? or a gift card to one of her favorite stores or even to the movies? that's what my daughters get me and i always like it especially the gift cards because i can pick something i really like. But you're right, mom's usually like whatever and I don't even want them to spend a lot of money on me. Hope this helps a little.
