In general, if you take a drug like this at that high of a dosage then there are other things to consider.
Abrupt withdrawal could lead to anxiety attacks, even if you took the drug for other reasons, say as a muscle relaxer.
The half-life of the drug is listed as from 20 to 80 hours, and after stopping a drug it takes 4 or 5 half-lives to be depleted more than 99%.
So, if it was 5 half lives to not test positive, it would be 400 hours.
(or about 16 days).

Read the long hairy flyer that comes with the medicine. All the answers that you would ever want (as well as a lot about which you wouldn't give a damn) are right there. In general, a medicine will wash out of the system at the same rate no matter how long you have been taking it.

The chemical will stay in your system for the same length of time no matter if you have been taking it for a week or 20 years, its removal is a matter of metabolism. The effects of taking it for a long time will not go away with the chemical no longer being in your system. The problem is akin to being addicted to any drug and needs a slow wind down period to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms. Be patient but do not give up, you will win in the end.

At first, it works as an antagonist on the GABA receptor site. But after a while your GABA receptors get used to it, and while it may alleviate anxiety, you don't feel that alcoholic-sedated feeling that one feels during the first six or so months. Valium has a very long half life (24+hrs), most doctors would probably cut it down 5mg every couple weeks or so if you'd like to get off of it.

If you get off it cold turkey you would definately cause more problems and it will hurt.
Just keep weening down at your own pace. The goal is to get off them and to ween down after all those years, it could take a long time to get used to it. You dont want to feel uncomfortable, so go slow but keep going. Sooner or later you will see you dont need even a quarter of a pill anymore.
Good luck.

Best to consult with a physician. The usual answers you'll get here will utterly confuse a normal person.
