I always say good morning or good afternoon. Most of them stand there to know what their passengers are like and to help themselves remember that each of these people are not just cargo but living humans just like their families. Also dealing with the public gives you a good intuition about what people are like. A good impression always starts with eye contact. Eye contact means the person usually has nothing to hide. Speaking to someone helps you to make eye contact.
