i would like to learn arabic and i don't mind working for/with the military or the federal government...but i don't want to join the military and sign my life away and go through boot camp and all that. i don't even mind signing a 6-yr contract or whatever. is this possible, or do i have to join the military? is there any other way i can study arabic at the DLI?

Arabic language is taught on other institutions other than the defense language institute which is exclusive to military personnel.

You can apply for jobs with the NSA and DIA. They might send you to training, but I wouldn't count on it though unless you know another language other than english.

The only other way is POSSIBLY and under certain circumstances is if you were a contractor for the military.... but do not count on it.
