She looks from side to side as she walks and one little noise makes her hop straight up in the air!! Also when I open a door for her to go into another room, she jumps about 1 1/2 feet to get there , she won't walk through. Help me understand her and is she really that scared of something? She is my spoiled baby, 12 yrs old already.

Cats can hear things that we can't. Maybe something is spooking her that you can't hear. Or maybe she is just being silly with an active imagination. I have a cat that jumps when I move to fast or scare him (not intentionally). And sometimes when he comes up to the backdoor to come in I'll open it and he just sits there. I've learned that when he does want to come in he'll scratch the door to come in. Otherwise, he'll just sit there looking in.

Your cat does seem to behave as though she's had a seizure. It may have caused her to lose some vision or caused a blockage to one eye so she thinks she's seeing something. A seizure is not always a death sentence for cats. The vet can prescribe medication that may help a lot! One of my cats lived 3 years after her first episode.

Your cat may also be reacting to a change in her environment. Perhaps there's a new cat in the neighborhood?

Take her to the vet for an exam and get the facts so you can make the best decision for her quality of life.

Good luck

I think it has something to do with age, are if it's a new place it could take some getting use to. don't really know my cat is 7 years old and she's the same way, i use to live in this very old house and she was always scared. but after i moved she did get much better. cats see things we can't, but if you find out let me know. you didn't say if this a indoor cat or not. if so try taking the cat out side a little and stay there with it.

Funny but I to have a "scardy cat" i don't know what causes it but in my scardy cat is now two years old and shes afraid of every one and every thing. She pretty much lives in our basement now cuz she cant stand the busyness of our home (two dogs and 4 teens) but I think she is that way because of the way it was for her when she was born. (I have her mother too) she was born real small of a litter of six and got pushed off and picked on a lot by the other kittens and also had lots of eye infections so she couldn't see real well for the first six to eight months so I think sounds scare her alot since she could never see and was being picked on by her family. I'm the only one she will go to since I bottle fed her and protected her in her beginnings. So think about your cats past maybe that will help!

Has anything changed recently...like getting a new pet, moving the furniture? Or did anything loud happen...like something falling and breaking? My cats have done that but only for a very brief period of time, usually after something startled them.

You could try just walking thru the house with her and talking to her in a soothing, reassuring voice the whole time. That way she can investigate and see for herself that nothing is wrong. Good luck!!

Does she do it all the time or has this just started happening?

If it has just started happening, there is a chance she's having some mental problems. Is she drinking enough?

I'd take her to the vet. Ours did that for a few days and was then fine for four days and then on the fifth day we found her hiding under the bed for no reason and when we finally got her out and to the vet, they said she'd had a seizure and there was nothing they could do and we had to put our 16 year old baby to sleep :-(

my cats only do that around the 4th of July, they are terrified of fireworks.

Is there an appliance making noise when your cat does that? or a new TV that makes a sound that only animals can hear?

We live near an Air National Guard base, and my cats hear the "roar" of fighter planes long before I hear them.

Either that, or she had something terrible happen recently, like something fell on her...cats react that way after an accident etc..

Awww =( Maybe she's seeing something that you aren't able to see. Many animals are known for being clairvoyant. My oldest cat won't go into our living room for some reason. She goes to this one spot and then takes off back towards my room. My youngest cat is afraid of slinkies. Its hard to say what it could be since animals have phobias just as humans do. I hope your cat gets better soon though.

Could be physical, as one person suggested, perhaps eyesight. In the wild, sick animals provide easy prey for hungry other creatures. This is one reason cats hide their illness. I would suggest you have a vet check her out.

Could be mental: Have you moved? A new pet or baby in your home? New "significant other"? Any of these may make her fearful. In that case, you need to give her lots of love and reassurance that she is safe & you are there for her.
