When we talk to God, we are praying.
When God talks to us, we are schizophrenic.

To those who argue that God would never tell someone to kill their children: Abraham, Isaac.
Maybe Ms. Yates just wasn't paying attention when God told her not to do it, as He did just before Abraham sacrificed his son on God's explicit instructions. Incidentally, today Abraham would be put away for life for what he almost did.

In response to wideawake42- that is so interesting isn't it. I always say that all those stories can't be true, as written by man "sinners" to translate a perfect God, because the bible makes God out to be a f'n prink! I wouldn't believe that my perfect God could do something like that , often out of anger or for his amusement. However in response to your question, this is a psycologicly advanced society. We talk ourselves out of even being human sometimes. And the fact is, considering her actions, AND she was hearing voices, there is no proof that it was God, the neighbor, the crack, the devil or anything, so people assume she's crazy. Plain common sense. Now if God talked to her and she was determined to spend all her money and life helping the needy, no one would care or question her. So this question is not really about if one talked to God, it is about what he said.

The Bit*h is crazy because God doesn't tell people to drown their children.
But small wonder she went nuts. She suffered from sever post-partum depression and had 5 kids under the age of 6!
Texas should have gone after her husbands A$$ too. He's just as guilty! He was told not not to get her pregnant because of the post-partum depression but he chose to believe some yahoo who decided one day that he was a Minister of God, rather than the medical professionals.

Because it's nutty to think that God would tell anyone to kill their children! THAT's why she's called nuts. We pray to God, to speak with Him, and he answers prayers in many many ways. Sometimes God 'talks' to people who aren't even praying to Him, but it's a quesiton of them listening, since God doesn't usually 'speak' to people as we speak to each other. He doesn't come out and give orders in a loud booming voice like the great and powerful Oz. He speaks through circumstances, through instincts, through our senses, and through His word. That's not nuts. It's just nuts to say "He spoke to me and told me to kill my kids..." you know, the kids he created inside me a few years ago, yeah He told me to kill them. How could you NOT label her as nutso or under the influence of somehting?

Because hearing from the Lord and being influnenced by the devil are two diff. things. And when people dont spend time with God they might hear something and attribute that to being God but are unable to discern that it is the Devil

I like this question...similar to the ones about the second coming of Jesus. I doubt anyone would really believe it was him.
Funny how the chosen folks in the bible heard God...doesn't make a lot of sense.

Because God wouldn't tell a mother to kill her children, then actually let it happen. Andrea Yates is obviously not sane.

many people hear from God. however in andrea yates case, she killed her children. God never tells anyone to do something that is contrary to His own commandments.

some people really hear God. like Moses, Abraham and other people. they hear God because God wants them to hear Him. if you want to hear Him, you have to be ready of what you're gonna hear because His voice is not always heavenly or something like that. but if you're saying that you hear God just to see your face on t.v., that's a different story then.
God is real and He'll always be.
