After working in a doggy daycare situation-- ANY dog with a good temperament is the best dog. Cute or beautiful dogs pale in comparison to an ordinary dog with a fabulous personality. Spending hours and hours with lots of different kinds of dogs taught me to ignore the looks of a dog and concentrate on personality. Spend time with a dog BEFORE you adopt.

Labradors are great dogs. Smart (thats why they make great guide dogs) Although they do shed alot of hair.
A great smaller dog is the mini foxy (tenterfield terrier).
It really depends on your living situation and what you want out of your dog.
The questions you have to ask your self is Do I want a guard dog? Do I want to be able to go for runs with my dog? Do I want a dog that to play with my kids?

Rat Terriers! They're easy to own and care for. They're smart, loyal, obedient, and yet still full of personality!
