Priests may be part of an order, or part of a diocese.

Diocesan priests typically do not take a vow of poverty.

Priests belonging to some orders, do.

The best way to determine what order a priest belongs to is to check out the name of the church that they preach from. However....most mainstream priests do not have to take any vows of poverty or such with the exception of celebacy. Heck here in CA (LA area) we have the cathedral of the Angels which is run by Cardinal Roger Mahoney. I know for a fact that he has not taken such a vow. Just google the church and read about the 1million dollar marble altar. I know that pastors of some Lutheran churches take vows of poverty since they can marry. For a priest to be true to their vows though I believe they must be a part of a monestary. We have a few here where I live including a Coptic monestary.

I've never heard of a priest that wasn't part of some order. I don't think you can become a priest without choosing one, but I could be wrong about that. And about the poverty thing, I think it's one of the vows taken by all priests and nuns when they join up. That, obedience, and celibacy.

I have never seen one who lives in poverty. In the Philippines they are the richest people around. They are like kings. lots of land fancy cars etc.

They are not in poverty. I know what poverty is. There are no priests in my neighborhood.

Priests are a part of the old testament and the sacrafices that they did then. We not have Apostle, Pastor, Teacher, and Evangelist. But the Old Testament priests were well taken care of by the offerings in the temple .. It is all laid out in the OT>
