Ummm, well, we are at war, but I'm sure they'll be fine. Especially since only certain specializations are being sent over seas. My sister is in the Marines, but you just have to have faith in them, and their leaders, they are the best trained military in the world. And I definately wouldn't worry now. Worry if they get sent to Iraq.

I don't want you to be overly alarmed but those making comments like "no terrorists are going to attack a ship" seem to have forgotten the USS Cole. There is potential for injury or loss of life in all branches of service. Not even including combat, there ARE accidents that occur at sea. Those stationed ashore are subject to IED, rocket, and mortar attacks like everyone else. Statistically speaking the Navy may be safer than the army or marines, but when the **** hits the fan statistics are out the window. War can go through various stages. We have an advantage now because we have air and sea superiority. That can change in a minute. Can you be sure that Iranian fighters wont attack a U.S. navy ship?...No. Can you be sure that one of our ships wont be hit by a missile like the Israeli ship a couple of weeks ago?....No. As I said I'm not trying to alarm you, I just think it is wrong that people have the false notion that members of the navy are not putting their lives on the line for this country just like every other branch.

Any arm of the military service carries risk if you join. But you shouldn't join if you are a coward. Bill Clintoon didn't. He's a coward...
Not true, VD. The Iranians have a torpedo now that travels 230 mph-- underwater. No ship can outmanuever it once it's fired. A hit is a 100% certainty. And let's not forget the Exocet missle of Falklands war fame that travels at supersonic speeds just above the water and below the minimum angle of the guns-- where it can't be shot down.

It all the depends on the job he is persuing in the Navy. I'm in the air force, and my job is delt with being inside a building and being safe. The Army and Marines are the ones to worry because if you are in the infantry, you are out ther fighting. But the navy is pretty much safe.. he's gonna be in a boat all day. There is no water near Iraq anyways.

There is always a chance that some one could die or get hurt when they join the military. If the person you are talking about is joining the navy, they should have a less likely chance of getting hurt than if they were to join the marines or army.

The navy is by far the safest service to enter unless he's going into the seals. Even then they have a massive washout rate. The other dangerous job is medical corpsman they travel with the marines alot. Otherwise your boy is entering a safe work place. Accidents can still happen but no more likely than in civilian life.

Just because someone is in the navy doesn't mean they will be on a ship or submarine. My brother is in the airwing in the Navy and he is stationed on an Air Force base and spends all his time on the flightline. He was deployed to Iraq for a few months and stayed on a base with Marines. The bases over there are pretty well fortified, almost everyone that dies out there are Marines or Army who are driving out in town. Roadside bombs are the number one enemy. But my brother never left the base. they don't let people leave the base unless they need them out there.
But for someone who said more Marines have died, I would have to say more Army has. They aren't run as efficiently as the Marines. The Army is basically out there not knowing what they heck they are doing. But that is my opinion based on seeing the Army in action first hand.
But back to your question. There have been all branches of services killed in this war, but unless he is a Navy doc out in the field with the Marines, the chances of anything happening to him are slim.
Hope that eases your mind. :)

There always the potential for all military personnel to be endangered. Its part of the job. But as for the navy, I'd guess thats pretty safe...prolly the terrorist navy is 3 guys in a rowboat.

I'm sure the seamen in the USS Cole floating off the coast of Yemen thought while eating their lunch in the cafeteria,
"you know, this Navy job is really safe"
BOOOOOOMM!

your love one should be pretty safe, unless the United States goes to war with Iran.

My son is in the Navy, since he enlisted 2 of his civilian friends died in a car accident and one was hurt badly in a motorcycle accident.
I think my son is safer in the Navy then he would be as a civilian. He had to attend a 3 day class for underage drinking. His underage friend drink and drive...a lot. He doesn't.
I think the Navy is fine.
