If you had JUST completed your braces and lost or damaged your retainer, I could see someone making a new one for little more than the lab fee. They would still have useful models on hand. Of course, your orthodontist still has the models he made your original retainer on, but (trust me) a new retainer made on those models would not fit your mouth today. You will need a new impression - top and bottom - and then they can make a new retainer. You will then need an additional visit in the office to make sure it fits correctly and to make sure that the wire and clasps are adjusted correctly. THAT's why it will cost $300 or more.
Now, if you are talking about getting a "retainer" to move some teeth, that's a whole different story. If you ask again with your reason for asking, someone will be able to give you a more accurtate answer - if this is not sufficient.

You know, I should know this, my cousin is a dentist and my best friend was one until he died at age 42 (aneurysm), but neither liked to talk about the money side of their business. But guessing at the amount of mark-up my cousin gave himself, I'd say just under $100. I also have two cousins who were in the business of making such things, along with partial plates, dentures, etc., both now retired.

it cost the dentist office nothing. Orthodontists make it there in their office. They mix up a paste and add the liquid and charge the patients what ever is standard protocol,

It depends. If you have insurance than you are going to pay a set price more than likely......after you have met your deductible of course. Call your insurance company and ask what is covered. Without insurance will run you much more. Ask around at different dentist offices.

<_<; i'm 12. i wanted braces for a longlonglonglong time. i'm getting them in 2 weeks, and now i extremely don't love them/choose them. They make your lips kinda puffy. yet retainers cost slightly funds. And it kinda ought to harm your mouth to positioned on them in the adventure that your tooth are crooked.

Are you talking about a retainer OR a mouth guard?
Did you wear braces? Do you grind your teeth at night?

The materials are probably not too expensive, but they have to be custom-fit, so it's labor intensive. That's where most of the cost is.
