I wish you luck on this answer. I'm of Hungarian ancestory and recently met someone who is traveling there next week. She tells me the language is reffered to as Magyar, it is a difficult language which is unique to Hungary and rarely used outside the country.

Hungarian is not one of those Indo-European languages that you can adapt prior knowledge to. It is quite different in structure. Check out the site http://www.hungariandream.com/languages/English/ if you get serious about learning the language

And while the English word "goulash" is, indeed, borrowed from Hungarian, as is the word "coach", the correct pronunciation is "goo-yash" and you will rarely say that in a Hungarian restaurant since you will always order "gulyasleves" (goo-yash-leh-vesh) 'gulyas soup' and you will note that there is neither hamburger nor noodles in gulyasleves
