FOR CLARIFICATION, THE SWITCH IS TO DIGITAL, NOT NECESSARILY HDTV.

Since he technology was new the prices were high, but now that materials ere cheaper the price is coming down slowly.Remember when the DVD players first came out they were going for over 1000 dollars, now you can get one for 39 dollars. My Samsung 27 inch HDTV was 800 dollars a couple years ago, now the same TV is about 450 dollars now
Even LCD TVS are going down in price just give it a couple years

You don't need to get an HDTV to be ready for the switch to digital in the year 2009, You don't even need to get a new TV at all. There will be set-top boxes available that will receive digital broadcast and connect to your TV. They are supposed to cost less than $50. Without even getting a new TV, your picture will improve. If you get your TV from cable or satellite, you don't even need the box--the switchover only affects broadcast TV.

it is very expensive becauyse of the materials they use . it is like having 3 tvs together and get a very refined quality. i think you should buy one because they are going to stay like that until a new type of tv is found. also the catode ray tube uses more electrons and more efficiently than regular tvs.
