My niece is only 14 years old she'll be 15 in March. Everytime we go to the movies which is mostly every Saturday she walks around with her friends before and after the movie. While she's with her friends she starts to smoke. She just started like 3 weeks ago. I've talked to her about it but she doesn't listen. She tells me that "smoking once a week won't hurt her". Can anyone help me and let me know if there's anything I can do or say that will make her stop smoking?? Also, the friends she hangs out with are not good influences for her. I'm sure she smokes because they do too. Either that or they tell her to. She pretty much does everything and anything her friends tell her to do. This one time she was about to have sex with some guy just because her friend told her to. Good thing she didn't. At least I hope not. She trusts me a lot & she tells me a lot of things but I'm sure there are some things she keeps to herself. What can I do???

once a week DOESN'T hurt her. please believe me...by the time she realizes its a mistake, she'll still have plenty of time to live her life. You may think it's the right thing now, but it seems she's stuck on her idea and not giving it up, pushing her would make her hate you.

you can educate her, and try to take her to other places, besides movies, places she can't be with the bad influences.

also...teach her good pretection methods, in case you can't stop her from early sex.

Smoking is a way to fit in, although she is right one cig. a week won't kill her, however until she gets a negative peer reaction to her "social smoking" nothing you say will make a difference. Teenagers have this "oh it can't happen to me" frame of mind when it comes to the down side of drugs-and yes nicotine is a drug. Showing your niece the math behind addiction might help. with cig. costing about $3-$4 a pack it can become a $100-$150 a month habit. That money could go towards a car or stereo system instead of cigs. Also talk to your police dept. about doing random checks of gas stations etc where cigs are sold. By making cigs harder to get for those under age you lessen the likelihood her friends will have them to share. Listen to your niece, let her know that cig. addiction sneaks up on you. It becomes not only a physical addiction but also a mental addiction. Stress=smoking. what teenager doesn't have stress? Help her find other ways of dealing with stress.

I feel for you and I've been there. It's rough to deal with teenager specially a wild one.
So my only advise to you is to keep explaining, Hopefully one day she comes to her senses, but never get upset on the subject Caz this will have a bad effect on your relationship with her, get closer as she lets you.
You could also explain, everything starts with one then two &....Most of my friends some never smoked cigarettes in their life start smoking joint(puff or two) at parties.....now they're heavyly adicted to meth.cock.heroin.....they don't even smoke joints any more.....sad...

Take her to your local hospital and sign her up to be a candy striper on the oncology floor. Or talk to your Dr. and see if he will show her some x-rays of healthy lungs and some of cancerous lungs. May sound harsh, but I have found that is the best way to deal with something that is soooooo cool to kids. Especially when they think that they are invincible!

Show her pictures and videos of cancer victims and the disease
itself in their bodies. That may turn her off all together.

Tell her that she will die a horrible and painful death if she doesn't stop.
