I used to think it was fun to catch spiders, now getting near one that is bigger than a dime makes my back cringe and I want to stand on a chair. (sometimes I actually stand on a chair and continually check everything around me for spiders).

Because you have temporarily forgotten that that poor little spider is only doing everything she can to get away from you so she can stay alive. She has eight little eyes to try to see where you're coming from, but still she only feels safest by running as fast as she can in the opposite direction from where you are. Please do her a favour by not frightening her any further. When you see a spider, slowly step back and respect her space. One day someone will step back from you and you will suddenly see the connection. Best to you from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. (I am 63 years old.)

You develop phobias just like you develop allergies -- over a period of time, even to things you initially liked. Spiders are pretty creepy, and some, like the black widow, are actually poisonous. If just keeping away from them doesn't correct your arachnophobia, then it's a full-blown phobia and you probably could benefit from psychological counseling to determine what it is about spiders that's causing your fears, other than the obvious thing I mentioned about poisonous ones. Non-poisonous arachnids -- even the dreaded tarantulas -- are really quite harmless to humans, but I'll admit I'd hate to find one in my bed.
