ok, so I have this mini dachshund hound named Oliver. When he was a puppy (and before he got clipped) he was extremly happy and loved to play ball and go for walks and only slept occasionally like a normal dog should do.
Now that he is fixed, he is fat and lazy. About 2 years ago he got into some sort of poison while out on a friends property. As a result of this he spent 7 days in intensive care at the vets. He almost died and it was sooo sad. Well ever since that he just lays around and acts depressed....except for when its time to eat or if he catches a glimpse of the family cat and goes tearing after him barking, lol. He probably sleeps 20 hours a day...which I KNOW is WAY TOO MUCH! I try all the time to get him to go for walks with me and after about 1 minute of walking he stops dead in his tracks and will not budge AT ALL! i know dachshunds can be stubborn, but what dog doesnt love to take walks? He is about 5 years old, so he isn't extremly old. whats wrong with my dog?

as for a so called gland that is funky...he got neutered he didnt have surgery on any gland...dogs get fat and lazy for the same reasons people do....too much food, a lack of excercise, and sheer boredom. I would on the other hand talk with your vet...he may have some residual effects from the toxin. If you are interested in training make sure you find a trainer that trains with a reward based method (no choke chains, ect.). Hope this will help

ummm id say a boxer becaue they're friendly and VERY energetic. but watch out because they can get a little bit dominant concerning other dogs. Or a bulldog. Fairly small, non aggressive, and friendly. But theyre kinda fat and dont like excercize much. U might get better luck for a smaller dog at the pound. I know the stereotype is all the dogs there hae issues but not really. U can find a good dg there if u look. And adoption fees at pounds are usually very cheap, so u might even want to get two, because dogs do better with friends.

he is a fat dumb and happy dog. if he still plays and chases the cat he's fine. If you want him more active you'll have to make it intoa game for him that he likes and he'll be more active. As far as the walks go. You ARE the Alpha animal in his "Pack" make him do what you want. I'm not saying drag him along but keep tension on the leash and he'll eventually realize who is in control. take carge or let him be. Dogs are like people there are super healthy always moving people and there are couch potatoes.

Get a trainer. I have no other solution for your problem, sadly. I know that after animals get fixed, a certain gland in their bodies causes them to gain excessive weight, and therefore they may lose the will to excersice because of the strain on their bodies.
My uncle's dog is exactly the same way, and he's going to hire a trainer for it. My advice would be to do the same.

Just be patient, bring dog out a little more each day.
Start out very slow.. OR bring dog to the VET
The dog might be in pain for some reason.

It could be the poison he got in to is causing residual health effects. I think you should take him to the vet. There might be something else going on.

Your dog probably remembers what happened when it went out for a walk 2 years ago.
Maybe you should tempt him with a treat to make him walk.
