Alcoholics have an allergy or chemical imbalance in their body to that when an alcoholic takes even one drink, the phenomenon of craving kicks in and they have no defense or control over alcohol and will continue to drink whether they want to or not. A drunk is just someone who has consumes too much alcohol for the evening, but will wake up the next day and not even think about taking another drink.

An alcoholic is a person who drinks alcohol to excess habitually, and a drunk is a chronic drinker.
If the person who is drunk drinks often then this person is also considered an alcoholic.
In other words, a drunk is a person who drinks to much and an alcoholic needs to drink because the person is addicted.

an alcoholic is an alcoholic reguardless of whether or not he/she is drunk. an alcoholic has an addiction to alcohol. an alcoholic could, but does not have to, be a drunk.

a drunk just happens to be drunk @ the time. a drunk might or might not be an alcoholic.

none. An alcoholic may still have a prayer, that something is still worth while enough to give up the booze. The drunk doesn't care anymore.

Nothing, but the perception of the community. An alcoholic is upper class; a drunk, lower class. They both have the same problem.

How to tell the difference between a social drinker, a heavy drinker and an alcoholic.

If a social drinker gets a drink and there is a fly in it, they will push it away and not drink it. (Which is alcohol abuse in my opinion.)

A heavy drinker gets a drink and there is a fly in it, they will take the fly out and drink the drink.

An alcoholic gets a drink with a fly in it, they will pick the little fella up by the feet and spank him saying "Spit it out, all of it!!!"

Just thought you might want to know. Peace.
