It's from the book "All Quiet on The Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. It was about a German soldier in World War 1. The Western front was mostly around Belgium and France. The Campaign on the western Front was home to some of the bloodiest battles of the war Namely The Battle of Verdun, The Battle of The Somme, and The battle of The Ardennes.

During the attack the British and French had gained 12 kilometres of ground, the taking of which resulted in 420,000 estimated British casualties, including many of the volunteer ‘pal’s’ battalions, plus a further 200,000 French casualties. German casualties were estimated to run at around 500,000.

All quiet on the western front is a book title and it's also a movie.

The main character is killed at the end, on a day where there was acutally very little fighting-- so little that the general or whoever wrote in his daily report: All is quiet on the Western Front.
