Yes. In my church we fast the first Sunday of the month and give the cost of 2 meals as a fast offering to aid those in need. I also fast if there is a special family need.

This is like a refresher course. From early morning to sun set do not eat or drink any thing and also some other things to observe. The main theme is to do only what is permissible from Allah and to leave what ever is forbidden from Allah.

Yes, today (& every Friday) I abstained from eating meat - on certain holy days I also fast. it is a good way to practice "poverty" and purification.
