the american academy of pediatrics recommends that you take your child at age one, or when their first tooth arrives. go to a dentist that specializes in pediatrics. my daughter was terrified of strangers, but the dentist let me hold her lying down on my lap with her head almost in the dentist's lap. then i tickled her and made her laugh, and the dentist was able to check her teeth easily.
i HIGHLY reccommend that you not let your child go to a dentist who will not allow you to be present. (some will not allow parents, as they say parents "interfere" too much). it will make your child even more afraid if mommy or daddy disappears while this stranger is poking at their mouth. not to mention, if you won't let me be present, i'm REALLY not going to trust you! dentists who have nothing to hide will allow you to be present.

Some people say 2 yrs is good.
Unfort we do not have dental insurance, and my hubby makes too much to get help.
I took both my sons when they were in kindergarten, because in my state its the law.
So they both saw the dentist, and had some cavities filled. Nothing major, but it does cost a bit of money. My dentist was really nice and lets me make payments if need be.
You need to find a dentist that is nice, and has a good reputation. The dentists I took my older son to was not that nice and they were a bit rude.
So I finally foudn this nice dentist I take them both to.
I also don't like the idea of my kids going back without. Some dentist don't encourage the parent going in, says it upsets the kids more. Well sorry dude, you aren't taking my 5 yr old back there alone.
God Bless
good luck

I read in the Touchpoints of Child Development book the other day that they reccommend children go to the dentist 6 months after they get their first tooth.
Before I read that I had asked my dentist the same question. He said that he reccommends about 3 years old unless the child is having problems. This way the child is old enough to sit still and follow directions like open your mouth or spit into this. Of course both sources and our baby's doctor recommend brushing the child's teeth every night with a non floride toothpaste as soon as he or she get teeth. We use a paste found in the baby section at Walmart that comes with a rubber brush that fits onto your index finger. Our son likes that better than the tooth brush I got him, and I can control it better.

my seven year old went to the dentist at 3yrs....now at seven, almost eight she is going to the orthodontist. My 14 month child has a appointment in six months, but we brush our teeth all the time!!!! Just make sure that you start teaching to brush early so that hey have a good cleaning base. and have them checked once a year. If you do not have good insurance you should check in to chips or programs in your state....Your child's teeth are so important and should be taken care of.......they will not do anything at the dentist for you when your child gets his/hers first tooth......how can they? One tooth does not let them know how they will come in and unless you leave a bottle in your babies mouth, the first teeth should be great.

I took my kids to the dentist when they were one. The first two visits were just "checking the place out". Make sure you go to a pediatric dentist. They know how to work with children.

I read it was as soon as they got their first tooth, but every pediatrician I have asked has said of course dentists say that. They told me unless there is a problem then they really don't need to be seen until they are about 5.

You can take them when they are about 11/2. Make sure it is a pediatric dentist. They do better with children than regular dentists.

The dentist will tell you when they have teeth. I would say when they are about two and they have a good number of teeth to check.
Until then you can take care of their teeth by using gauze and water as a toothbrush..especially after milk time.
