Because God is love. Emotions are not part of some evolutionary adaptation, they are blessings from God to better serve and praise him and enjoy life more abondantly.
Have a nice day :-)

Why would God feel love? I don't believe God "feels" love. God is love. I am not love. I can only feel and attempt to "show" love.
"Love is merely a survival instinct we mammals have in order to organize ourselves into protective groups(families)." - As a fellow answerer above noted, that is just one type of love. All aspects of love are God and love is far more than just an emotion.
You are correct that "God would have no need for such an emotion since he is immortal, and therefore does not need anyone else for his survival.", however, we are quite different. I suggest you think about what you said and imagine God a little bigger than a magic sky daddy. God is pure, truth, peace, hope... God is the author of every good and perfect thing. Again... God is love.
I suggest that our quest for love is the exact same as our quest for God.

If love is "merely a survival instinct we mammals have in order to organize ourselves into protective groups" why do I love people who are not in my protective group?

If your false presumption that LOVE is one dimensional - then your statement would be true. Love is of great depth and different variations or forms, and is not based on survival instinct.
I have to wonder what your one dimensional idea of "love" really is. God experiences love for us and all his creation. Any right thinking normal parent understands this, so I must reason that either (1) you are teen or unmarried with no children -or- (2) you have a very warped idea of what love is. -or- (3) both 1 & 2.
Love is not sex, sex is lust. Love is not craving, craving is of either lust (greed) or survival instinct.

Well that's an interesting thought. However, God does love you. In fact, if you knew how much God loved you, you would just not believe it.
I went to a movie once...there were two people sitting on a curb talking. One of them had a broken heart over something. All of a sudden, I felt this incredible feeling, it just overwhelmed me. It was love. Interestingly enough, I knew it was God's love I was feeling, like He would feel for people sitting on a curb and talking about things that hurt their hearts. Why He chose to show it to me sitting watching that particular movie, I'll never know. But I've never forgotten that beautiful moment.
The kind of love God has for you is unlike anything on earth. You may not understand why or how He loves, but He does....in a way larger than we can imagine.

The "love" God feels is not the same as what you are talking about. The love of God has nothing to do with emotion. There are many forms of love. (You should do a little research about this. It's interesting.) God's love is not all about roses and sunshine. It can be tough and chastening. His love is about knowing what is best for us, even when we do not know the same.
The best way I can explain it is: God so loved His creation, He wanted to share it. (Maybe you can relate to this.) He wanted to share it with people who chose to love Him in return. They weren't just ordered to do so, as the angels were. They actually chose to love Him, so much so that they would seek Him. He was after relationship.
I think that's why God understood what Adam was going through when he was alone. And that's why it says that God said it was not good for man to be alone. Hence, He created woman.
God is truth + love.

The truth is God is love. If you knew the Greek word "Agape" you would see that is the kind of unconditional love God has for his creation. (i.e. us) Eros is the love you speak of which is erotic love between a husband and a wife. Fellial love is the love of a brother or a sister. We all need love because we were created in God's image.

What about the kind of attachment you feel for that Lego sculpture you made when you were 5? You make something and you have a bond with it, you like looking at it, and you're sad when the kid down the street throws a rock at it. Could it just be this kind of attachment?

That is your take on love, not reality. For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son tht whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
