From all I've researched, it seems to me the simplest explanation is that Jesus never existed at all, but is instead a composite myth of several other characters combined with pre-existing myths, legends, and wisdom teachings popularized around 150 BCE.

Rev 22 12-16 says:
Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”
There is only one God, but throughout the bible we are made aware of the different manifestations of God - in the Word, in the Flesh, and in the Spirit. Each of these manifestations seems to have their own persona, yet they are all one with God in mission and purpose. Read John 1:1-18

Jesus is God and Man at the same time. He is considered God because HE is all-knowing and all-powerful, among other Divine qualities HE has. He is Man, too because he was born from a mortal like Mother Mary, he did that so that the human race will find it easy to relate to HIM. He will be considered UNREACHABLE and UNAPPROACHABLE, if HE did not become Mother Mary and St. Joseph's son.
Being a prophet was one of HIS tasks. he needed to teach/inform people about HIS Kingdom which is a spiritual not worldly KINGDOM.

All of the above depending on who you ask but the important question in the end is who you decide He is? I believe Jesus Christ was Flesh (Human) and born of a woman but not from the sperm of a man but that the Holy Spirit of God's creation. I believe each Human has an inner spirit that dwells and lives inside the physical body. Jesus had a physical body but instead of the spirit insided being a created spirit by God it was God in Spirit. God is not someone that can be described or even understood by Human intelligence but has to be taken on Faith. Yes he was a Prophet as well in that he fortold of what was to come in future times. He was also God's only appointed sacrifice for human (man/women's) sins through his shed blood through his crucifixion as a sacrifice for our sins. Unlike when we Human's die and our inner spirit leaves our bodies Jesus's Spirit (God) left his body for only a short time and returned to inhabit His Resurrected body and thereby rose from the dead and is still alive today one day to return again. That is who I believe Jesus is, was, and continues to be.

Its possible he never even existed, but if he did, he was just a man who had different theological thoughts than the majority at the time. He was raised by the Old Testament, and that was what founded his basic principles of his own teachings. We know nothing of character, not even if he was benevolent or not because how could it be proven since the record of his life was writted by many sources who could've possibly been bribed, threatened, or in on his scheme of creating his own cult. It was a cult when founded simply because it was a small religion that opposed the primary beliefs at the time...

Whether he was the son of god or a fictional character in the best book ever written,he was certainly enough of a character to survive for over 2000 years in peoples hearts.

A great prophet, a great man.
"God is the Eternal, the Uncaused Cause of All Being.
He begets not, and neither is He begotten
and there is nothing that could be compared with Him."
GOD IS ONE.

Jesus is God' Son, who died for us, that if we trust Him as our Savior & try to live as He wants us to, He will reward us with eternity in heaven with Him. Those who only acknowledge him as a person, or a prophet, etc. do not have the promise of spending eternity with Him. Those who do not will experience unending pain. Your choice but His Word, the bible explains who He is.
