I would suggest two products called No-Go! and Get Serious! No-Go! is completely organic, and Get-Serious is biodegradable, so it will be safe for everyone that is in your household. What it does is prevents your dog from wanting to go in areas where you spray the product. Generally pets have one area that if they are going to have an accident it tends to be around the same place. The Get Serious! removes Pheromone which is what attracts pets back to where they have previously went at. Get Serious is really useful because it actually not only removes the Pheromone but also the ammonia that dog urine naturally carries. It also lifts any stains that you might have without fading carpets or leaving residues behind. I have 3 labs, a blue heeler, and a pitbull, so this stuff definetly keeps my house smelling nice and fresh.

The best thing would be to get an enzyme based product like Nature's Miracle, XO, or Out! (There are more available). These enzymes will actually neutralize odors instead of masking them. Do NOT use ammonia as this may actually attract animals to urinate on that spot :) When using the enzyme cleaners you must usually soak the area well and allow it to fully penetrate. Obviously, follow label directions, however, and don't forget to do a "test spot" to check for colorfastness. Oh, and please do not use bleach unless you like spots. (P.S. this is why i do not have carpet :) ) Good luck!

I've had a lot of success using baking soda on pet odors in furniture. Sprinkle it generously on the carpet, and let it set for several hours or overnight. Then vacuum it up. It might take several tries.

Remove the pets from the house. It worked for me. Animals belong outside, unless they are old like you say, so maybe the garage on the concrete floor. You could also replace your carpet with wood floors, but then the urine would seep into the cracks, and who would spend that kind of money for a pet? I hate carpets regardless!

There is some stuff at PetSmart called PetZyme that works wonders. Just spray it on your carpet / floor / furniture and the smell goes away. I have a Pit Bull and a Chihuhua so I have to have something that works.

The best thing to use is vinegar, works for skunks too. Nearly all of the commercial items list in this thread are based on vinegar. It is cheap and works great. You can use it 100%strength or cut 50/50. I used it with my Wire as he was dying of prostrate cancer, my Welsh when she lost control, and my Airedale pup as I housebroke him just recently. One of the best suggestions I ever got.
