There isn't bleeding, and it isn't red, there is no discharge, but the incision has a distinct odor (like a baby's umbilical cord before it falls off) and part of the incision looks white. It is 11 pm here, and the vet is open tomorrow morning, so I will call then, but can I put neosporin on it tonight, and will it help her? She isn't acting like she is in pain, she is still very playful, eating, drinking, and happy, so I don't think it is major, but it is enough to give me a nagging feeling...

Since you are calling the vet in the morning don't do anything tonight.

DO NOT ever give human medications to a cat. Your cat might lick the neosporin off and it could hurt her. The vet will give you panalog or something like that which will be safe for your cat.

Neosporin wouldn't make you cat feel better anyway.

Thank-you Virtuoso. I'm glad to know the neosporin is safe for cats.

Hi there...it's best to leave the wound untreated unless your vet specified otherwise. The wound will change as it is healing...sometimes darkening around the incision, but because you've mentioned that there's no infection (pus/discharge) it's healing fine. Self treating with human products isn't advised without consulting the vet first. Some animals will try licking the topical, which isn't ideal, but again only a vet would best be able to advise what would be helpful and if Neosporiin is alright, but most likely isn't necessary.

No...Do not use Neosporin unless told to do so by the vet. Cats skin heals differently than ours. If she is acting normal then I wouldn't do anything until I've talked to or seen the vet.

You can put peroxide on the incision, followed by neosporin. Follow up with the vet ASAP. Hope this helps.

My cat broke his toe once. Normally, I wouldnt do anything about it, the doctor won`t do anything to a human toe much less a cats. It was infected however because the nail also got ripped off. I took him to the vet and she gave him antibiotics and told me to put neosporin on it. Yes, neosporin is obviously safe to use on a cat.

Yes, you can put neosporin on the cat. Are you sure the smell isn't betadine...the stuff the vet puts on the stomach area to disinfect it before surgery?

If the wound doesn't look swollen or red, and there is no discharge from it, I wouldn't worry. Put the neosporin on her to make yourself feel better...her wound should heal fine with or without it.

If she's not acting like it's bothering her, leave it alone. It's probably just part of the normal healing process. Call the vet in the morning to ease your mind, if you want. I wouldn't put anything on it otherwise.
