Panic Attacks/Anxiety??

Whenever I go to the doctor/dentist I freak out. I am terrified of needles all together. I am not scared of the pain at all, which is weird. A few minutes after I get a shot, I usually get very very hot. Then, I start feeling very weak and my head starts spinning or I feel very nauseous. What is wrong with me? Somone suggested that I may have panic or anxiety, but I do seem to fit the descriptions of that. What can I do to help this? What is wrong wiht me? Please help!

You have a phobia or irrational fear of needles, which can psychologically induce the physical symptoms that you describe, such as feeling faint, dizzy or nauseous. Lots of people fear needles, and not just little kids either, although I suspect that it starts in childhood and then you have a conditioned reflex or response every time you get a shot. But you're not alone, dear. There are thousands of people who experience the same feelings that you describe when you get shots. Lots of things can cause phobias and panic attacks, especially medical or dental procedures. They say that misery loves company, so now that you know these feelings are not yours alone, but are shared by many people -- that alone can ease your anxiety. So can discussing it with someone you trust like your parents or a good friend. If the problem persists, maybe your doctor can prescribe a mild tranquilizer to calm you down when you need a shot. The best way to conquer a fear is to look it squarely in the eye and see it for what it is -- a psychosomatic reaction. In other words a physical manifestation brought on by unusual stress. You won't die -- I promise. And this, too, shall pass when you realize how harmless a mere shot can be.
