I am Bipolar and yes you can collect disability for it. You need to go to your local Social Security office and get the paperwork needed to get the ball rolling. They will direct you from there. Don't expect to get it over night it took four months for mine to get approved.

Call the social security administration at 1-800-772-1213 from 7am to 7pm. They can schedule you an appointment to apply either in person or by phone.

There are listings for BiPolar and Depression. Sometimes it's difficult to obtain a favorable decision. You can also call National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) at 1-800-431-2804 for a referral to an atty to represent you. Most don't charge an atty fee unless they win. You may have to pay for copies of your medical records and the atty will be given a percentage of your backpay.

This is not a fast process and a lot of factors go into it. eg. the severity at which your records list your disability, the local office, the judge, etc. Do not be surprised if you get 2 denials and have to request a hearing. It happens a lot.

Good luck!

Yes, you can, but it is not easy.

Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to set up an appointment to apply for SSD and SSI. If you are going to apply for SSI you MUST also apply for SSD. You may be eligible for one or both programs. If you get denied for SSD because you are not ensured, that will not affect your SSI application. That just means you don't have enough work credits to collect SSD. SSI and SSD will both use the same disability decision, so you will only have to submit your medical information once.

The SSA will take a look at your situation and compare it to their listings. If your situation meets their listings, you can not work, and you meet other financial requirements, you will be approved. It sounds easy, but it is not. Here is a link to their listings.
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/AdultListings.htm

It is helpful if you could print out the part of the listings that talk about your disability and bring them to your doctors, therapists, or anyone that you will be listing on your disability report. Tell them that you are applying for disability, and that your situation has to meet those listings. Ask those people to keep that in mind when they fill out any report that is sent to them from the SSA, or ask them for a letter that describes your situation that you can bring to your appointment at the SSA. It is important that they are honest, but they should highlight the areas of your situation that are discussed in the listings.

After you make your appointment, you will be sent a disability report and possibly an employment history report. To save yourself time at your appointment, make sure these reports are filled out as much as possible. You can even do your disability report on line, which will save even more time. Go to http://www.ssa.gov/ and click on "apply for disability benefits" under the "disability and SSI" section. Follow the instructions. You can fill out a little at a time, as it will probably take a few hours. When you are finished with it though, make a copy of the entire report before you click on that final send button at the very end. Bring a copy of the report with you, just in case the rep. at SSA can not access it on line.

If they do end up denying you, that does not need to be the final word. You can appeal the decision if you do get denied. You can request an appeal right at the SSA.

Good Luck!!

I have Bi-Polar along with sleep terrors and they kept denying me. My doctors signed off on it and all. So I guess it just depends who you are. At the time I was also suicidal. I wish you luck in the fight. They approved my aunt's dissibility the day she died with hepatitus C, she was bed-ridin with a 16 year old daughter. I don't believe in disability anymore.

Only if you can get the SSI consulting Doctors to sign off on it.

Your own Doctor has to indicated you are partially or totally incapacitated by it.
