drops out of highschool they should be forced to go into the military? Or have the same ideology as some smaller countries that they must serve atleast 2 yrs after highschool (unless they go on to college)? I know its kind of an old school idea, but it used to be a semi-popular one, I was just curious how the rest of the US still felt about this?

Just so I make myself clear, I'm not saying I am for or against it, just an earlier conversation. I think the idea was done more for keeping kids in school than anything else.

NYJETS 45 -- I think if people "migrated" to Canada to stop from protecting their country, then they should be "EXPELLED PERMANENTLY" from here.

Not everyone is military material, but if you run away like a chicken, then stay away. It's that simple. You don't like it here join the Canadian Army instead! Draft dodgers and people who run from joining don't deserve to be Americans Anyway!

I spent 6 years Active duty Army. It helped me tremendously!!!!Not just growing up and learning responsibility but also once you are out the benefits are still there.

I think kids should do 2 years of military right out of High School or attend a College and get a Diploma. Not bad. Don't want to fight/protect your country because you aren't the type or you are just plain chicken, get a college Diploma learn something and get a better job.

The US military took an extroidenary step when it ended the draft. Something few other nations even today have done. The result has been a much better quality of military. When people volenteer they cannot be concientious objectors. They WANT to be in the Military. So they will do a good job.

What I am rather surprised is that the old choice of jail or military is gone. The Military when it all boils down to it is a violent organization. Many people in jails today just need out of situations/environments that promote the activities which got them tossed in jail in the first place. A chance to earn enough money to make a living, get an education. Obviously the violent aspect is not a problem, they show great tendancies for it already :) If the Military isn't thier thing then they can head to jail instead. Fewer people in jail. Many of those who would otherwise wind up with perm criminal records and go on to become career criminals find a new life in the US military. Sounds to me like we really need to bring that back.

Nope, what sense does it make to force conscripts into an army to fight for freedom? Sounds contradictory to me. If we can't get enough volunteers to defend our freedom we don't deserve to have it.

I volunteered in 1976. The drill sargents had not yet adjusted to the all volunteer army and didn't quite know what to do with us. We were better educated, and more motivated than what they were accustomed to seeing.

I think the Military has been improved by the change away from conscripts. I also don't think we short handed in the military either. We have 70,000 in Germany and about 100,000 in Europe. The last time I checked WWII was over and the Soviet Uniion no longer exists. We have another 30 or 40,000 in Japan and I think the Japanese surrendered back in '45. There's over 30,000 in Korea and the North Koreans are now so afraid of the South they've built nukes.

While we may be over-extended right now. A lot of that could be solved if we came up with an exit strategy or some kind of timetable for a withdrawal from Europe, Japan, and Korea.

Well, it works for the Israelis. However, we don't live in the type of everyday fear that they do.
NO. I don't think that everyone should be made to serve. Although I think I would have grown up faster if I went into the military, I am not military material. Not everyone is.
Of course if our country was looking like it would be invaded, I would be at the front of the line signing up to learn how to defend her.

NO!!!! The Military does NOT Want uneducated individuals who can not take responsibility for their own education -- and these days -- the Military requires such a HIGH standard of intelligence that it DEFINITELY EXCLUDES Those individuals who have dropped out of High School and have not inished their education to at least through the secondary level.

For the most part the military requires a diploma or a GED. Also, many dropouts have behavioral, personal, or medical issues that would make them a bad choice for military service.

I also think it is a bad idea to coerce young people into training to fight. I am sure there is another way to help dropouts.

i believe its bad to force anyone into the military, but remember the military is the backbone of any nation, without it there is no nation.a country must do what it has to do to survive and protect itself, even if it sets up a mandatory service in the military for its own people.i am lucky that the country that i was born in and the country that now i live in has no such crap.

No, this is a free country, don't force people into the military, it's large enough already, and guess what, you know how many people would be immigrating to Canada with that law in effect.

No not the way the world is today. I do feel they should attend a technical school. This school would give the skills to become a skilled laborer in a field that are interested in.

You can`t force on people. The person who did not finish high school may have a harder time succeeding just like a immigrant that can not speak English may have a harder time succeeding.
