Why is there a cotton ball in some vitamins and supplements containers? Also, is it bad to leave the cap off?

The cotton is for shipping. The bottles have the proper pill count, but that does make the bottles full. So they put in the cotton, so they don't rattle around and break.
Once you open the bottle, you may discard the cotton. But you should put the cap back on for two reasons. First, to prevent the pills from spilling all over if it gets knocked over. Second, so the pills don't get damp when the weather is damp.
There is nothing wrong with getting an Easy Open bottle from your local drugstore and MOVING your pills into that. In this case, the top will come of easily, so you don't mind keeping the cap on.

The cotton keeps the vitamins from moving around and getting broken during shipment. Vitamins should be kept in a cool, dry area with the cap on.

Cotton keeps the pills from rattling. Doesnt matter if the cap is on or off, unless its a gel cap,they might harden.

Cotton keeps the pills from rattling around and prevents them from damaging each other. Leave the lid on tight to protect the pills from air and moisture. Store them in a cool, dry, dark place.

To keep the pills from breaking during shipping and yeah...most of the bottles say to keep in a cool dry dark place so the cap being on would help with the darkness

So they don't break to bits while being shipped....They would be fine for quite awhile but best to keep the cap on.

the cotton is there to seal in the freshness, so you better believe that every one of your pills is going to be delicious, crisp and refreshing, i think that's why?! sounds like a commercial, must be true??
