Sadly, yes indeed. The Christian God cares more for penance and obedience than quality of character. And no, it's not right or just.

There is more to it that just belief. The book of James attests to this. Matthew 25:31-46 has a lot to say about it as well. It's the famous 'sheep and goats' parable in which Jesus talks about who will go to heaven and who will not. Those who go to heaven are those who did good works (the will of God). The passage has nothing to do with belief. Certainly, there are other passages in the Bible that would contradict this, but it's there in Matthew nonetheless. Consequently, based on this passage and the book of James, I'd have to say that Hitler would have been most likely excluded from heaven (if God does such a thing) due to his lack of charity and mercy.

That's what I have heard Baptists and Pentecostals say. But yet if your grandmother who never hurt a person in her life didn't accept Jesus, she would be in hell forever.
It really makes you realize just how wacky the fanatical beliefs are. And yet they want us to believe that there is a loving God. Yeah? Well, do the slightest thing wrong, and you're in the big slammer! Of course, a person can get saved and then continue to do whatever they want and justify it in the name of God. If they sin, they can just say "oopsie" and all is forgiven -- again!
But as for you ... you better not forget to return your library book -- or else!

Your question is an excellent one, and a common stumbling block for people struggling to accept or maintain their faith in Jesus.
The Bible states that "if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, then you shall be saved". It's that simple to have a life eternal in heaven with God. True belief equals true salvation.
However, the Bible is clear that every man can only truly believe in Jesus with the permission of the Holy Spirit. And the Bible clearly states that God hardens the hearts of those He chooses to harden. Therefore, not everyone is allowed to truly believe in Jesus
If Hitler had accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior before he died, he would have been saved. I doubt however, that Hitler ever asked to be saved. I doubt that God would open Hitler's heart to allow him to accept the truth of Jesus. But we will never know.
Here is another similar question to yours. There have been serial killers who have claimed to accept Jesus during their incarceration. Were these people saved?
If they truly accepted Christ, they were saved.
Did God grant these men His mercy and allow them to truly accept Jesus? We can never know the answer to that question.
Keep your heart and mind open to the truth of Jesus Christ. God and His word will reveal to you the truth.

May I correct you on one point? It is not according to "Evangelical Christians" that this is so. It is according to the BIBLE that this is so. God forgives anyone if they truly repent. You ask, is this right? The God I worship will forgive the worst sinner, if that person truly repents of their sin. Who am I to withhold salvation from anyone? I am thankful He had mecy on me, a sinner. God also saved my Dad four days before he died, because he finally did repent and accept Jesus. The enormity of gratitude I feel for what God has done in my life, and the lives of my family, will not have me question God's mercy for anyone else.

So as an atheist I can live a life of sin, and then change my mind on my death bed? Wow, why don't more christians get in on this? It'd sure beat going to church every sunday, and having to put up with the rest of that religious sh*t.

In this case, I prefer the Catholic view. Under their system, Hitler committed or was responsible for so many mortal sins (namely murder) that he would never be able to get into heaven. Also, since he killed himself and that is a mortal sin, he would go straight to Hell.

If he honestly asked for forgiveness and truly accepted the gift of unconditional love in return, then yes he would have been forgiven.
God does not care what the sin was - he cares that forgiveness is asked for and received in return by an honest and sincere heart.
