I have a Dell laptop running Windows Media Center 2004. There are so many programs that start every time I boot up, and I'd like to disable many of them but I can't figure out the best way to do it. I thought you could type something like "system.ini" in the Run window but that doesn't work.

you run msconfig, then click the "start up" tab. Good luck!

The information for the startup programs store in several seperate locations in the computer (e.g. startup folder, registry run key, Run service key...)

MSConfig will do the job. However, it will be easier to use a startup manger program which gives more information about the startup program.

I used a tool called CleanMyPC and it displayed more detailed information for the startup program than MSConfig and you may have a try.

CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner is at: http://www.registry-cleaner.net/

You go to... Start...Run...msconfig..click Startup....then do your thing..

BUT IT"S MORE EASIER if you use CCleaner...the program is very easier 2 use..and you will know what program you're disabling..unlike the doing the other way only uses this" merts.exe" ..just use CCleaner...and plus it's a small program and it's free.

Last time I agreed with someone Yahoo! took points away from me. Maybe it's because I said something about points. Anyway, to help ensure you that the previous comment is correct, I'll concur yet again.
