After Pope John Paul II died, there was a good chance that Francis Arinze, a Nigerian cardinal might be elected Pope. He still could be, depending on how long Benedict XVI's pontificate lasts. Arinze is about 10 years younger than Benedict. On the other hand, Arinze has indicated he would like to retire and return to Nigeria soon. But who knows? Arinze would make an excellent pope.

Probably not, but there have already been three from Africa:
* Pope Victor I (189 to 199)
* Pope Miltiades (310/311 to 314)
* Pope Gelasius I (492 to 496)
Also, tthe current Pope might last thirty years. At present the Roman Catholic Church is stronger in Africa and Latin America than anywhere else. So you will see a black pope, but probably not in the next 30 years. I'd say the odds are 50/50 for a black pope by the end of the century.
Peace.

Johnny T makes good points, but I'd give longer odds than 50:50 by the year 2100 because of the conservatism of the RC church, never mind how fast the church is growing in 3rd world countries.
With Ratzinger in the chair, don't expect any huge leaps forward soon in terms of modernization or power shifts. (*Why* can't we get another pope like John XXIII, preferably one in his 50s or 60s?)
A black pope? Probably by the year 2200; can't set specific odds.

Possibly. Only God knows.
Although I do not know if they were Black, there have
been at least three African popes:
• St. Victor I (189-199)
• St. Melchiades (311-314)
• St. Gelasius (492-496)
With love in Christ.

No. Not unless he is the next Pope, because the apocalypse will occur with the coming of the next one.

That would depend on how long the next pope (and possibly, his successor) ends up living.

Wouldn't that be something?
I'd like to say yes, but I'm not Catholic and do not have a firm grasp of Vatican politics.
