You must have a firm foundation,box spring,or at least a flat piece of plywood,plus you should turn your mattress and rotate it corner to corner every three months to prevent sagging.

I'd prefer a bed board but slats will probably do it as long as you use enough of them, they are the right length and strong enough. Also depends on the type of bed frame. Do you have one that is reinforced in the middle so it won't "splay" apart? If so, slats have a better chance of working.

For best comfort, a box spring is what you want. The mattress will last longer too.
