The German Shepherd Dog was first bred in Germany by Captain Max Von Stephanitz in the late 1800's. He intended for it to be the ultimate utility dog, capable of being used for cattle or sheep herding (shepherd); police work; military use, etc.
German = country of origin
Shepherd = sheep herding, original intended use for dog
Edit: Judging from the person's user name, perhaps they're not from a country where the German shepherd is well-known. The question isn't necessarily a silly one.

It is a breed of dog and they are very protective of their owners. You have to notify your insurance company if you have this breed of dog since they are known to bite both their owners and others. I love this breed but they can be unpredictible with strangers and small children.
