No, I got one with no problem. It's as simple as filling out the FAFSA and waiting for your school to determine your financial need. They usually give you a grace period of 6 months after you graduate to find a job and start repaying the loan. They have some awfully long repayment terms, but if you don't keep up with your payments it can mess up your credit.

if you are unemployed or a minority they will hand you one...otherwise if you make more than $5/hr forget it! they'll say you make to much!
