Over half of my relatives are Jehovas Witnesses, and they all apparently have a drinking problem

I have seen that Jehovah's Witnesses are allowed to drink, but only in moderation, since the Bible does condemn drunkenness. They will refrain from serving alcohol at some gatherings, if they cannot control the amount people drink, or if they don't want the hassle of controlling it. After all, why let drunks spoil your party?

There are a lot of misconceptions about what they are allowed to do or how they feel about the guidelines they follow or why they do it.

Occasionally, you might get someone who really doesnt want to be there and so they will give you a negative report.

And then you have those who are resentful that they dont participate in the holidays or the like and so claim that they are stingy, But, there are a lot of things that they do celebrate that have no pagan background (do your own research in an encyclopedia on the background of some of the holidays - and maybe you will understand that they have nothing to do with anything that started out in pagan religions.)

But, if someone does not want to stay there, they dont have to. Anytime you join a group, no matter what that group is, you agree to their guidelines or bylaws as some organizations call them, or you leave the group, by your choice or thiers.

But, I also know that if your relatives truly have a drinking problem, bring it the attention of their elders, and they will work with them to correct it. They really do live up (as a group) to the standards they feel God has set for his followers.

All humans who are imperfect make mistakes, so they do to, but if it is a serious sin, then their elders will work with them to get them back on the right track, or take the necessary measures to protect the rest of thier flock.

Not all JW's like to drink alcohol. As in any other group, some don't drink at all, some rarely, some moderately and there are a few who really do drink quite a bit,by most people's standards. However, even those who drink a lot don't usually drink to the point of drunkenness, or they would be disfellowshipped. Your relatives may fall into the category who like to drink a lot, but it's unlikely they drink to the point of drunkenness, at least not regularly.

If the elders in their congregation are aware that a "worldly" person such as yourself has observed this about them, they would probably counself the individual(s) to be more discreet in their drinking so as not to 'stumble' you. JW's, like the Pharisees in Jesus' day, are very conscious of how people "view" them. In fact, Jesus woudn't be able to hold a position in the JW organization today since he ate with prostitutes and thieves, thereby setting a "bad example". Your relatives might also be considered bad examples by "good" JW's.

why does everyone feel compelled to lie about Jehovah's witnesses. I never see stuff like this about Babtists and I have known some real drinkers. This in itself makes me believe they are right. Only the true religion would receive this much attention by everyone. You never hear anyone say anything about the Church of Christ. I have an Uncle who is an alcoholic who goes there. so they must all be alcoholics. That is the stupidest reasonings. Yes and all black people eat fried chicken and all Mexicans carry knives. All muslims have a bomb on them.

It sounds like the problem is more genetic than religious.

You mention that ALL the relatives have a drinking problem, but only HALF the relatives are Jehovah's Witnesses. Jehovah's Witnesses do not tolerate a pattern of drunkenness by their adherents.

A dedicated faithful baptized Witness would not do that. You say they "apparently " have a problem, so you are not even sure of the facts. We are able to drink in moderation, but drunkeness is forbidden. The apostle Paul told Timothy: "Be no longer a drinker of water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities." Paul was saying that water would not help Timothys health problems, but wine would.
That drunkiness is a sin is found at 1 Corinthians 6:9,10: "Or know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
If a brother or sister were to practice drunkeness, they would be put out of the congregation as 1 Corinthians 5:11-13 commands us to do: "but as it is, I wrote unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no, not to eat. For what have I to do with judging them that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Put away the wicked man from among yourselves."

True Jehovah's Witnesses do everything in moderation, we are always on our best behavior as we are representing the Most High God, Jehovah, and we know the world is always watching us. The Bible says of Christs true followers, that they will make up every sort of lie concerning us. Jesus said; if they persecute me, they will persecute you also, because you are no part of the world, the world hates you, because if you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is it's own.

That's obvioulsy a stereotype. I'm not a Jehova's Witness but I do know that you can't make a claim for a whole race simply based off of some people that you know.

My husband is a JW (I am not) and he hardly ever drinks. I don't think that anyone in his family does either, we'll all have a beer or two at dinner, but that's about it. They are really not the monsters that people try to make them out to be. My in laws are great to me, and I'm not a member of the congregation.

Jehovah's Witnesses have a motto and that is "Everything in MODERATION." So, I have a feeling your po'd at them and trying to make them look bad because you know most people don't like them already.

Shame on you! In fact, the ONLY ONES WHO DRINK IT AT PASSOVER are the ones Heaven Bound, so you should be more tolerant and less hateful.
